Subtheme 3
Borderscapes
The practice of creating and identifying material and symbolic borders can also be analysed through the lens of the arts: from traditional Mexican art and contemporary border art, to cinema, photography and social media, art has always played a fundamental role in the processes of making borders visible or invisible. This can be applied both to intangible or conceptual borders, which might appear more subtle but are still very effective, and to tangible, or material borders, which produce a physical break. Although different in the materiality, both intangible and tangible borders exist to divide.
The third subtheme will explore how art has explored the concept of borders, with a focus on the contemporary experiences, such as: narratives of Europe, nostalgic journeys, migrations and diasporic experiences, borders and communities, mapping borderlands through the visual; border art as a political strategy.
